The root word for “meekness” is a hard word to interpret. It is not defined as being weak, like some may think. It is actually quite the opposite. It is really referred to as a strength that is restrained. It is a power that is subjected to discipline. Jesus taught that meek individuals are happy individuals and that they can be trusted with more. Some people chase after happiness by throwing their weight around to get what they want. They think that happiness can be achieved by making a phone call and ruining someone else’s life. Some use their power and influence to get what they want, because they think that they can. True happiness is not acquired this way. People, who are sincerely happy, have found that true happiness comes from obeying God. That is what the meek have discovered. They know that happiness does not come from chasing their dreams and doing whatever it takes to reach their goals. They know that their strength comes from God, and they do not abuse that power to get what they want. God gives power and abilities to His children, but that strength is under subjection to God’s rule.

Jesus said that the meek shall inherit the earth; this is because they can be trusted. They have proven, in this life, that they are willing to obey God. They are the type who have abilities and power, but did not abuse their strength to get what they wanted. They find their true strength in obedience. They could have chased after the world’s stuff, and probably could have gotten it. They could have used their God given gifts to pursue the lime light. They could have gone for gain in this life, but chose to suffer and to follow God’s purposes for them. Since they have proven that they can be trusted with power in this life; God says he will give them more in the next life. They will be trusted with more in God’s kingdom, because they were willing to submit to Him while on earth. Some have realized that if you humble yourself, God will exalt you in due time.
